The Scripture ~ I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands.
Psalm 63:4
The Spiritual Focus ~ I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess. Rev. Martin Luther
The Devotion ~ Our hands are one of the first places we naturally think about when we wish to express the emotions that we feeling in our heart. Last week we talked about mudras or hand positions that help us reconnect and redirect the our emotions in a more positive direction, prayer pose for example. While mudras help us center in our inner sanctuary, our hands are also used to express our emotions to the world around us. Hands raised in praise, a simply peace sign, hands shaped in the form of a heart all communicate something about us to those around us. Practiced in love our hands can symbolize the love of God, we become the hands of God.
As we continue our journey thru lent, as we see with our eyes what God sees, as we hear with our ears God’s voice, as our hearts are moved in the direction of healthy self love, the outcome becomes a practice that witnesses to the very DNA of God, God’s love.
What does this practice look like? Getting our hands dirty, maybe. Holding a baby, what joy? Holding up a friend or a stranger who is suffering, yes, these are all ways to give God’s love away, with our hands and our hearts. The practice of opening our hands to receive God’s love, holding God’s love in the sacred space of our hearts and then giving it away, may look like the opportunities right in front of us, that come our way everyday. This is the practice of being the heart and hands of God.
