The Devotion ~ The mystery of Easter is a mystery that 1st century followers of Jesus struggled to understand. So many questions, so many theories about what had happened, so many attempts to comprehend how the one they loved could be crucified and then raised from the dead. And then, in the days following the resurrection, there were sightings of Jesus by his disciples. Jesus was eating with his friends, promising them peace and encouraging them to be changed by the experience of his life.
The mystery of Easter is one that 21st century followers of Jesus continue to try and understand. We have studied the stories and while we can know much about God in the person and life of Jesus, we must at the end of the day conclude there is much we can not know, much we do not understand. We believe the Easter story when we become comfortable with mystery. We believe because we trust by faith God’s promises. It is God who instills faith in us through the Holy Spirit.
Connecting with God, experiencing the Holy Breath and gaining the confidence to trust in the mystery of God does not happen naturally for most of us. One place to practice trust, a place we can come to with all our questions, is when we experience God’s presence on our mat. Our mat becomes our sanctuary where we ask and receive God’s assurance. Our mats become a place where we don’t have to ‘know’ everything and are open to the mystery of God. It is natural to desire knowledge, but mystery is a part of our story too. When we practice the mystery of God, the knowledge of Jesus and of ourselves on our mat, we experience wonder in the relationship promised by God.
