The Scripture ~When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established; what are human beings that you are mindful of them, mortals that you care for them? Psalm 8: 3-4

The Spiritual Focus ~ Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that have been built against it. Rumi

The Breath Prayer ~ I Am Loved

The Devotion ~

Psalm 8 is a favorite scripture for people of faith to meditate on. It is a favorite because it speaks of God’s creative nature, grandeur and mindfulness of us, all in one breath. It is hard to comprehend that God could create something as spectacular as the universe and still be aware of us. Even more awe inspiring is that the God who created such beauty is not only mindful of us but seeks to be in an intimate relationship with us. We are God’s creation too, created in the image of God for the purpose of love and therein lies the mystery. We search and search trying to find some reason for this paradox rather than leaning into the mystery of a loving relationship with God. What if, as Rumi says, we sought out the barriers to love in our own lives, went IN and broke down those barriers to love? Would we in the process find an intimate, healing love experience of God? Some might believe they have no need to do such excavating, some may feel that it sounds like a daunting task, but the truth is somewhere in between. We could all be more mindful in our relationship, more loving of God and each other, AND it is not that daunting of a task. Rev. Michael Curry says it simply, “If it’s not about love, then it’s not about God.” In mindful meditation we have the opportunity to go to the sacred space within and break down barriers to loving relationships by simply asking the question, is this about love or fear. If it’s not about love then let God dispel the fear and open you to love.

On January 31st a rare cosmic occurrence is set to happen, a super blue blood moon. Scientist, theologians and yogis all wonder at this mysterious event. Perhaps our task is not to understand it but to experience it as the loving handiwork of God. Grab your mat or a chair and be present to God’s awesome display of love.
